Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries used to power electric lift trucks must be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures must be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is very important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is essential for employees working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothes from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be located close to the charging area. The path to the post should not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed near a battery and charging area. Do not allow things such as matches or lighters to be used when an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
